Hi Briana,
Karl here, I am a local, long-time actor here in Boston.
This May 9th, I am running a networking event for actors to meet with LA casting director, Toby Guidry. Toby just cast principle roles for Zemeckis and Spielberg, and the films Pelham 123 and Bride Wars which were shot here in Boston last year. It is a great opportunity for us actors to get to know a CD who casts principle roles in feature films, and I thought you may be interested. Sorry for this being a plug, but it should be a great event.

certainly-
first, getting into SAG, be a principle performer in a SAG production (how i got in) then you are 'sag eligible', which m eans you can buy into sag at any time after that, but not work on a sag production again until you become sag.
also, you can get 3 'waivers', which you get working background as an extra. the waivers are a bit harder to get. basically a SAG production needs something like 80% of their cast to be SAG. If they have a bunch of non union extras they will bump some of them up to SAG for the day to make sure they have enough sag people on set. that's a waiver- its a bit harder to get. I have done background for 3 different productions and havn't received a waiver, some people get them quickly though... so its a toss up...
once you are SAG, rule #1 is no nonunion work. SO it is a bit of a sink or swim situation. Being SAG you are in the biggest and best performers union in the world. You work for pay, you're a professional. It can also be restricting if you don't have the proper training, experience, networks etc... My advice would be to keep doing non union projects, get clips for your demo reel. You can still audition for SAG roles, but don't bother joining the union until you believe you're ready. i hope that helps...
I think too many people join the union with little on their resume- you're screwed if that happens. you've got a good resume though so just make sure you can get enough clips , good acting clips, and then look for the next step. let me know if that made sense...
not sure, i htink trailer will be done mid january.. they still need me to do some voiceover i guess... ill hafta make sure to get that done pronto! ive been 'in between gigs'. Worked background on gossip girl couple weeks ago which was fun!! looking to get more work in nyc... i joined SAG so no more nonunion work for me, rule #1!!! anyways- good luck with your play! id love to do some theatre now that im union, i thinkk ill be in an episode of oldbury hill soon, maybe next week, not sure... check it out!!! haha take care
Wow thats great..Do you have to miss a lot of school for these things?? I kno i have to and they are always asking why im always out. But i havent done much in about a month..i really have been focusing on dancing at my school i take a dance class at school and i really like it. Im getting my portfolio done next month i believe so we will see what i get out of that. But let me know about any open auditions and work like that please. Thanks kaila
