Group Description.
The Rhode Island Actors Meetup Group is a collective of actors from the NE area who meet once a month for a number of reasons:
First and foremost this is a great way to network with other actors, and to share resources and advice with one another. It also gives the actor an opportunity to develop their craft--not only do we develop our improv skills with exercises, but we also work on scripts either selected by one of the organizers, or written by local talent to be workshopped.
Although we cater to the 'film' side of acting and production, we encourage all types of performers to attend.
And to be absolutely clear--this is a safe environment. We do not intend to 'teach' anyone how to act, and in no way consider this a 'class.' We leave critical observation up to your acting teacher. There may be constructive critiques, depending on the project or exercise, but we want to stay away from any form of formal critiquing.
Here's how a typical meeting plays-out: the first portion is a round-robin introduction bit. We try to keep this first part relatively speedy. Next we do another round-robin of sharing--here we can tell people a new photography we worked with, perhaps a new production company. You may also share information about a movie or theatrical releases you're a part of. Anything relating to the 'biz' and your relationship with it. Next we move on to the action! We will either fool around with some improve exercises, or we will potentially work on a script. With the Improve games, there are a gamut of different exercises we do. Some of them very loose, and others a bit more structured. After we've finished our improve or script/scene work, we will wrap it up with a few closing remarks. Here we will discuss next month's meeting, including possible preparation for the coming event. We may also brainstorm about ways to improve the meetup group.
The above is a typical meeting, however we plan to mix things up from time to time. We will either bring in a guest speaker--who we promise to be interesting and groovy--we may all go to an independent film festival or showcase, we might have specific nights where we work with the camera...who knows. We want this group to be a dynamic, evolving collective. We encourage new ideas, topics, and exercises. We also plan on having 'movie nights', in which individuals are welcome to bring in films they've worked on.
* No one is forced to actively participate.
