Serving the Film and Television Industry in New England

Ever wonder how to make the right choice as an artist - whether you are a filmmaker, actor, writer....? Should I be in a short film tonight or go to this networking event instead? What types of film projects should I try to be in? Is one genre better than another if I am thinking about my career? With all of the activities going on, at times it might seem like we are spending so much time "doing" that we have lost sight of the overall picture. A lot can sometimes depend on being in the right place at the right time - so how do we make choices - especially when most of us do not have professional management behind us to advise us on what might be best for us. Are our choices always the best just because we made them? Anyways, I am not claiming to have any of the answers, I am posing this discussion to see what people might think about the subject. From the Discussion, perhaps we migth learn from each other - are there any guidelnes to follow that might emerge from a discussion?

Earl Nightingale once said "Success is when preparedness meets opportunity" I believe "success in show business is when preparedness meets luck"
You have to play to your strengths. It was strange to witness a rapper turned underwear model turned actor evolve into an uber - producer. Guess Mark Wahberg was born with the right stuff.
For me, on a personal level, it comes down to how I spend my time, efficiency and positive energy

It's true, at times we make the "wrong" choice but even then, if at all possible, try and find the good or at least seek out what you can learn from the situation. Situations such as bad auditions, lousy video shoots, critical opinion and so on

I remember Paramahansa Yognanada walking out into the rain and someone said to him "My God, it's raining this is terrible, look at all the rain" and he replied "Well it certainly is a good day if your business is selling umbrellas" and he ignored the rain

I am a firm believer in the circle of good and positive energy, eventually it comes back to you in some way, shape or form

The tendency with filmmakers is to judge other artists but it's important to find your own path and be supportive.

The fact that you are just out there doing it matters. And that applies to auditions, small roles or anything. It's getting up everyday and applying yourself to your art or craft and making the best of it. Maybe you are not famous or noticed or getting paid large sums of money, but the mere fact that your energy is applied to a passion is a good thing
When you're picking among projects from people you don't know, you should simply go for the one that sounds closest to your favorite movies. Life is too short and filmmaking is too hard to spend your nerves on stories you wouldn't go out of your way to see if you weren't involved in making them. That strategy may or may not lead to career success, but it will lead to personal success, because work you have your heart in almost always produces work you're proud of.
